Club history

The team originated in the early 1970s in the Johannesburg township of Soweto. Chiefs’ founder was the former Orlando Pirates player Kaizer Motaung, who had returned from the USA right before establishing the club. The title of the team was formed by merging the founder’s name and the title of the USA club he formerly played for (Atlanta Chiefs).

Only 4 years after the club’s inception, Kaizer Chiefs players lifted their first piece of silverware — the National Professional Soccer League trophy. They repeated the NPSL success 4 times since then. Add to this 3 NSL and 4 PSL trophies (the most recent from 2015), and you will get one of the most successful South African clubs of our time.

Kaizer Chiefs results in the domestic cup competitions have always been incredibly successful, too. The team are the 15-times MTN 8 winners and have 13 Telkom Knockout trophies. Moreover, Amakhosi (club’s nickname) won 13 Nedbank Cup editions, which is an absolute South African record.

Kaizer Chiefs fixtures were incredibly successful in 2001. In that year, the club won its first (and as for now only) international trophy — the African Cup Winners’ Cup, along with winning the Telkom Knockout. Thanks to their international performance, the team got an opportunity to fight for the CAF Super Cup with an Egyptian giants Al-Ahly. Although Amakhosi lost that match, they still got the status of the most successful club in Africa of 2001.

During the period from 2005 to 2009, Kaizer Chiefs were banned from participating in the international African competitions. The reason for that was their all-of-a-sudden departure from the 2005 CAF Confederations Cup. However, the club kept (and still keeps) performing well on the domestic arena. Among the most recent team’s achievements are the PSL title (2015) and the MTN 8 trophy (2014).
