Competition structure and rules
Currently, the European Challenge Cup draw includes 20 teams, which qualify for the tournament either through their domestic competitions (18 representatives of the Six Nations countries) or through the Continental Shield (2 remaining teams). In total, the representatives of 13 European countries are eligible to take part in the competition.
The European Challenge Cup draw consists of two major parts — the group and knockout stages. In the group stage, clubs are evenly divided between five groups. From October to the following January, they play the double round-robin competitions within groups. The point awarding system is traditional: +4 for each win and +2 for each draw. The classical rugby bonus points are also used in the group stage matches.
After the group stage, 5 group winners advance to the knockout stage automatically. Three most successful group runners-up go to the next round, too. If there is a tie within any of the groups, the head-to-head statistics between the tied teams resolve the dispute. However, if there is a tie in the common table, the overall stats are the main tiebreakers.
The knockout stage consists of the 3 rounds. In the first of them (quarter-finals) clubs get numbers from 1 to 8 (the number depends on the team’s group stage results). The order of the quarter-final matches is the following: #1 vs. #8, #2 vs. #7, and so on. Four teams remain in the competition for the semi-finals — they play in pairs. Afterward, two semis’ winners fight for the main trophy in the grandiose Challenge Cup rugby final.
All the Challenge Cup rugby fixtures, including the final, are single-legged.
