DFB Cup format

According to the current format, 64 teams take part in each DFB Cup season. 40 of them are all Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga participants along with the 4 most successful 3rd Liga members. Another 21 clubs are the winners of regional competitions (Verbandspokal). The remaining 3 places accrue to the teams from the regions with the biggest numbers of men’s soccer clubs. These are usually Verbandspokal runners-up. Such a structure allows amateur teams to fight for the DFB-Pokal along with the professionals.

German Cup fixtures usually take part from the middle of August up to the June. All participants enter the competition in the first round without any byes.

First, all teams are divided into two equal pots. The first pot includes all Bundesliga teams and those 2.Bundesliga clubs which didn’t play in the third tier in the previous season. The second pot consists of all other participants. In the 1st round, every team gets a random opponent from the opposite pot. Teams from lower divisions usually host professional clubs on their home grounds.

The winners of the 1st round matches stay in their pots for the 2nd round. If pots are not equal, those clubs, which didn’t get an opponent from the opposite pot, play with each other. Starting from the 3rd round and up to the semi-finals, all remaining teams are united into a one pot. However, the teams from lower divisions still play at home when meeting professional sides. In the end, two strongest clubs fight for the main trophy in a grandiose DFB Cup final.

All German Cup fixtures, including the final, are knockout, with playing an extra time and a penalty series if needed.
