Copa del Rey format

The tournament consists of 3 qualification rounds and a final phase, which, in turn, includes 5 stages. Unlike other European cup competitions, Spanish Cup involves the limited number of clubs (83) from 4 highest divisions of Spanish soccer pyramid.

In the first round, only teams from Segunda B and Tercera take part in Copa del Rey fixtures. However, some clubs from two lowest divisions receive a bye. On the 2nd round, Segunda teams join the competition. And on the 3rd round, there are no new entries — the remaining clubs fight for a chance to proceed to the final phase. All qualification ties are single-legged.

In total, 32 teams come to the final phase. These are 12 best participants of qualification rounds and all 20 La Liga clubs. Starting from the round of 32, all Copa del Rey fixtures are double-legged. On this stage, some Primera Division clubs meet the teams from lower leagues, and some of them play with each other. 16 best participants of this round proceed to the round of 16. After that round, quarter- and semi-finals are held to define which 2 clubs will take part in the Copa del Rey final.

In the rounds of 32 and 16, teams from lower divisions receive an advantage of a home ground. On the following stages, match hosts are chosen randomly.

Spanish Cup winners receive a place in the UEFA Europa League if they aren’t eligible for the Champions League instead.
